He was born November 14, 1926 in Newburyport, MA., son of the late Ivory Warren Flanders and Gladys (Carruthers) Flanders. Herbie grew up in Merrimac Port, MA. His family moved to Hampton, NH and Herbie left high school to enlist into the United States Navy and serve during WWII. After the service, he met Eva Landry at a grange hall dance and they later wed on October 28, 1949. They settled in Hampton Falls, NH for the next 26 years to raise their family. They further expanded their business, renting space locally and opening Seabreeze Trailers, which manufactured and sold custom built trailers. Seabreeze ran from 1959-1975. Herbie sold the business and worked for several RV dealers specializing in Airstream design. This brought him to work at a business in Franklinville, NJ for several years until his retirement. He returned to the seacoast and in semi retirement connected with an old friend classmate, Melvin Clark, working for the next six years at Mel's Truck Sales. Beyond that, Herbie was known to always putter with his children's various working projects. He was an expert mover of objects, whether they were trains or homes at the beach. Mr. Flanders was a member of the American Legion Post# 70 of Seabrook. His greatest hobby was harness horse racing, which he was able to thouroughly enjoy through his son's Richard profession and career choice.
