John Austin Harney, 82, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont died in his home on 1/18/2010. John was born to Francis and Florence Harney on 10/25/1928 in Lockport, New York. John is survived by sisters Pam Bassett of Greensboro, GA and Sheila Linscott of Newark, DE. Surviving brothers include Francis Harney of Tilton, NH, Peter Harney of Raymond, NH, Robert Harney of Columbus, OH, Edward Harney of Lydonville, NY and James Harney of Macedon, NY. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and their families. John was preceded in death by sister Mary Alden and brothers Charles Harney and Michael Harney. John is survived by son John Harney, Jr of Lexington Virginia.
John was also preceded in death by his partner in life, Nancy Barber of St. Johnsbury, VT whose family he shared including children Glenn and Peggy Barber of St. Johnsbury, VT, JoAnn Craffey of Spring Grove, IL and Sharon and Micheal Fillion of Washington, Maine. Survivors include several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John served in the United States Marine Corps following graduation from high school and served in WW II with the occupation forces in China and Japan.
John’s professional life was divided between Sales and Management of Ford and John Deere equipment and Chief of Police in Raymond and Twin Mountain, NH. At the time of his death John was employed with Harvest Equipment of Newport, VT. Funeral Services were held in St. Johnsbury, VT.
