Janet N. Johnson

Janet N. (McGovern) Johnson, 77, died Sunday, April 8, 2012 in Exeter, NH. Janet was born on January 27, 1935 in Morristown, NJ, the daughter of John P. and Elizabeth (Dawson) McGovern.

Janet was raised in Herrick Township, PA and graduated from Wyalusing High School in 1952. After graduation, she enlisted in the US Air Force with three years of active duty.
During her service she was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. After discharge from the Air Force, Janet attended Wilkes Barre Business College.

Janet worked for GTE Sylvania in Towanda, PA for 13 years. In 1973 she moved to Eliot, ME. She worked for 21 years for the Department of Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command, Management Systems Support Division at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During this same period, Janet was attached to the New Hampshire Air National Guard, 157th Air Refueling Group at Pease Air Force Base in Newington. She retired from the Air National Guard after 20 years of service.

Janet was also a 35 year member of the Eliot American Legion, where she served as the first woman Commander of Eliot American Legion Post 199 during 1980-81. She was active in both the Eliot and Towanda (PA) Lions Clubs. She was particularly proud of her military service.

Janet resided at Langdon Place of Exeter for the past three years. She faced the many adversities presented to her during this time with great courage and dignity.

Survivors include her daughters, Pamela Strong and her husband Doug Simmons of Stratham, NH, Ann O'Keefe and her husband Tom of Brentwood, NH; her sister Joyce Byrd and family of Liverpool, NY; four grandsons, Ryan Eberlin and his wife Kara of Towanda, PA, TSgt. Kevin Eberlin and his wife Julie of Shreveport, LA, Patrick O'Keefe of Raymond, NH, Daniel O'Keefe of Brentwood, NH and great-granddaughter, Mary Kate Eberlin of Towanda, PA.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Saints Peter and Paul Church, 106 3rd St., Towanda, PA. Burial will follow with military honors in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org; and to the New Hampshire SPCA, PO Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.
