Raymond, NH
Charles A. Lord, born July 10, 1919, to Arthur and Eva (O'Brien) Lord in Groveton, NH died peacefully at Mr. Carmel Nursing Center on Monday, January 7, 2013. He was predeceased by Cynthia (Price) Lord, his wife of sixty-six years and by his sister Mildred and brother Clyde. Longtime residents of Raymond, he and Cynthia moved to the Meetinghouse in Manchester in 2005.
Following graduation from Groveton High School, Charlie volunteered for the Army early in 1941 and served in the medical corps through the duration of World War II, spending most of the war in North Africa and Italy. With help from the GI Bill, he graduated from UNH, class of 1950. He often said that after his marriage, the GI Bill made the greatest difference in his life. He reentered the Army in 1950, serving three years during the Korean conflict. He would continue serving in the Army Reserve, retiring in 1969.
After graduate studies at Tufts University, Charlie began teaching in Candia in 1954. His career in education would continue in Hooksett, as the teaching principal of the Memorial School in 1962, and at the Exeter Area Middle School, from which he retired in 1979. Along the way he would coach baseball and basketball in Candia and Hooksett, and originate and coach Candia's first Little League team.
In retirement, Charlie and Cynthia enjoyed spending winters in Florida, first in Sarasota and later in Naples. He also greatly enjoyed stopping in Orlando to visit the theme parks each year.
During the last year he was capably and caringly attended by the staff of Mt. Carmel Nursing Center. In his last months the Manchester Visiting Nurses Association provided much appreciated support and guidance. He is survived by his son, Robert and his wife Karen in Manchester, his granddaughter, Amy Lord and her wife Elizabeth of Portsmouth; nieces and nephews and by close family friends, Jane and David Corbett.
Calling hours will be Thursday, January 10, 2013, from 3:00-5:00 PM, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 2 Epping St., Raymond, NH. Prayer services with military honors will follow at 5:00 PM, at the funeral home.
