Ralph Howard Clover of Wellfleet, MA and Exeter, NH died peacefully Wednesday November 2, 2011 at age 84 surrounded by his family. Raised in small-town Warsaw, Indiana, he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17, graduated magna cum laude in 1953 from Harvard College on the G.I.Bill, and was working for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he was stricken with polio at age 27. Although only partially recovered, he made the most of his abilities, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1960 and practicing corporate law as a partner in the Philadelphia law firm of Drinker, Biddle and Reath until his retirement in 1987.
He is survived by his son Ralph Jr. and his wife Winifred Stopps of Cambridge, Mass.; his son Thomas of Cambridge, Mass., his daughter Dr. Margaret Tilton and her husband Rob Leatherbee of Exeter, and grandchildren Grace Singh, Alice and George Tilton, Shanan Miller, James Renninger, Justin, Katy and Nicholas Clover, and by 7 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his 5 siblings, by his daughter Kathleen, and by his beloved wife of 61 years, Dorothy Clover, who died on October 6, 2011

He had great intellectual gifts and great humility, always identifying with his small town Midwestern roots. Polio left him physically impaired but never psychologically disabled. He dealt without complaint for the rest of his life with ever-increasing physical limitations, adapting his world to what he was still able to do.
He loved his family and friends, poetry, music, cryptic puzzles, gardening, and above all his life-long partner and dearest friend, Dorothy.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wellfleet, Mass. on November 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Wellfleet. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
