Exeter, NH

Burton G. MacArthur passed away peacefully on February 1, 2017 at Exeter Center in Exeter, New Hampshire. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on August 14, 1920 he was 96-years old. Son of the late Gordon G. MacArthur and Helen (Milligan) MacArthur, Burt was educated in the Waltham, MA school system and graduated from Waltham high school class of 1938 where he participated in ice hockey and football. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees at Boston University where he was captain of the varsity ice hockey team. Burt served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and saw combat duty during the Battle of Okinawa. He also participated in the initial landings in Japan. Burt had a long and distinguished career as an educator including teacher/coach at Amesbury high school Amesbury, MA where he started the ice hockey program; Athletic Director at Tantasqua regional high school in Sturbridge, MA; Principal at Exeter High School in Exeter, NH where he also started the ice hockey program; and finally Principal at Triton Regional High School in Byfield, MA.

Burt was active in many educational and community organizations including President of the Worcester County Principal Association, President of the Rockingham County Principal Association, President Essex County Principal Association, Executive Board of the New Hampshire Principals Association, President of NHIAA, Executive Board of the Massachusetts Principals Association, President Exeter Rotary Club, Executive Committee of the Exeter Recreation Department, one of the original founders of the Jim Houston Hockey Committee and a vestry member of Christ Church Exeter.

Burt was predeceased by his wife of 68-years Marie (Murphy) MacArthur. He is survived by his brother Lorne MacArthur of Waltham, MA and his family, four children Anne [Allen] Zobay, Burton MacArthur Jr., Wendy [Fred] Keith and Robert [Dawn] MacArthur and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Exeter, NH on July 8th 2017 at 2PM. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH is assisting the family with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Burt's name to the New Hampshire Association for the Blind, 25 Walker St., Concord, NH 93301, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, www.nationalmssociety.org, Compassionate Care Hospice, 18 Orchard View Dr., Unit 4, Londonderry, NH 03053 or the charity of your choice.
