Sophia K. D'Arcangelo, 99

Portland - It is with a mix of sadness and joy for a long life well-lived that her family announces the passing of Sophia K. D'Arcangelo on March 30, 2017 at the Barron Center in Portland, with both of her children by her side. Born on May 5, 1917, Sophia was born in Exeter N.H. to Mary (Damasky) and Frank Mazurka, the seventh of nine children. She was educated in Exeter public schools and graduated from Robinson Female Seminary. Sophia learned the value of hard work early on, working at Exeter Hospital and the Exeter Handkerchief factory in her early years.

After a long engagement, she married Donato D'Arcangelo in 1945. While raising two children together, they worked in local textile, shoe, and electronics factories in the Haverhill, MA area to make a lovely home and ensure their children the resources necessary to be the first in their families to attend college. Sophia was a member of the Catholic Women's Club of St. George's Parish in Haverhill, the Bartlett School PTA, the Boot and Shoe Works International Union, and the Communications Workers of America. In retirement she and her husband loved vegetable gardening, visits from their family, and travelling with friends and enjoying adventures throughout New England, California, Florida, and maritime Canada. Throughout her life, Sophia was a model of all things a strong woman should be: gentle but fiercely protective, sweet-natured but feisty, tender-hearted but tough, and open-hearted and ceaselessly kind to everyone she met. Predeceased by her husband, parents, and eight siblings, Sophia is survived by her children, Joanne of Portland, ME and John of Venice FL, as well as nieces Mary Sanville of Kingston, NH, Patti DiPietro of Parsonsfield, ME, and Linda Prioli of Lynn, MA; two nephews, Clifford Davis of Exeter, N.H. and Lawrence Locketti of Surprise, AZ; and and several grandnieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply. Her family would like to express heartfelt appreciation for the support, kindness, and care Sophia received from the excellent staff at Park Danforth's Clarks Terrace and in her final months at The Barron Center. Services were held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Brewitt Funeral Home and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Exeter, NH, with internment at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Haverhill, MA.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sophia's name to:
