William Ernest Heitz "Bill", 86, died April 17, 2017 at the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth, NH. He was born November 16, 1930 in Medford, MA., son of the late Leonard L. Heitz and Ethel (Cantell) Heitz.
Bill grew up in Medford, MA. He served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and resided in several different states including California, North Carolina and South Carolina. He married Arlene Skillin in 1953. Bill earned his BA from Cal State University at Long Beach and his MA degree in Education from Salem State. They resided in Hamilton, MA. from 1962-2015 where they raised their 3 children. Bill became a cornerstone of the community professionally, civically and recreationally as a teacher at Hamilton Elementary School for 30 years. Bill enjoyed sharing his knowledge and he even taught astronomy to kids where they would have nighttime class meetings and also photography. He served a three year term as a Hamilton selectman. Bill was the Hamilton Middle School Football Coach for many years for which many people will appreciate and remember him. He was also a published writer and he produced and hosted many programs on local cable television including interviews with General Patton's son, Major General George S. Patton. This footage is in the Library of Congress.
Bill was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Hamilton, MA., the Massachusetts Teacher's Association, the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club and the Hamilton Senior Center. He and Arlene have resided in Portsmouth, NH since 2015.
Bill was predeceased by his brother, Leonard L. Heitz and a great nephew, Michael Heitz.
He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene Heitz, daughter, Laura "Laurie" Heitz, son, Mark Anthony Heitz, daughter, Debra Jean Heitz Ficara, 6 grandchildren, Bonnie Ficara, William Ficara, Michael Ficara III, Christine McKenmy, Suzanne Quigley, Stefanie Ramey, 1 great grandson, Tyler McKenmy.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, Hamilton, MA. with a reception to follow at the church.
Burial with military honors will be held a later date at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Beverly Bank, 48 Enon St., Beverly, MA. 01915 for the Michael Heitz Fund.
