Lois Blumenscheid of Exeter, New Hampshire died peacefully on Saturday April 29, 2017, surrounded by her family. She is survived by Walter, her husband of 64 years, sons Bob and his wife Patti of Columbus, Ohio, Richard and his wife Sue of Newburyport, Massachusetts, grandchildren Blair, Anna, Ben, and Skyla, and nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Katherine Knittel and brothers Robert and Bernard.

She was born in Newark, New Jersey, and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She received a teaching degree from Newark State Teachers College, now Kean College. She taught second grade at Columbian School in East Orange, New Jersey for 10 years.

Lois and Walter lived in Westfield, New Jersey for 41 years before moving to Stratham, New Hampshire in 1996. They were members of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, where Lois was involved in many volunteer activities. She served on two Pastoral Nominating Committees, worked at the International Gift Sale, taught Sunday School and was ordained as Deacon and Elder.

As a volunteer for Contact We Care in Westfield, she answered the suicide hotline for hundreds of hours, including overnight shifts. She also worked on many activities as her sons passed through Boy Scouts and the Marching Band. She was a tireless helper to many throughout her life.

Lois loved both nature and travel, often combining the two. She liked to collect rocks and was an enthusiastic fossil hunter, traveling on field trips with the Trailside Mineral Club in Watchung, New Jersey. Later she became the President of this organization. An avid birder, she traveled to Antarctica to see penguins, to Northern Quebec to see gannets roosting, to Alaska to see bald eagles and to Plum Island to see snowy white owls. She took many trips through the United States, visiting almost all of the National Parks in the West, as well as Canada and Europe.

Lois especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and sharing her love for nature with visits to the Children's Museum in Portsmouth, the Seacoast Science Center and Plum Island.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newburyport on Saturday, May 13 at 2 PM, with a reception following at The Boulders at River Woods in Exeter. A private burial will occur later in Westfield, New Jersey. The family requests those wishing to honor Lois to donate in her memory to the charity of their choice.
