Dr. Paul J. Uhlinger
Exeter, NH - Dr. Paul John Uhlinger, a scholar, minister, humanitarian, husband, grandfather and great grandfather died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at age 93. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Martha Jane (Hughes) Uhlinger of Exeter, NH, devoted daughter, Marthanne Pressey and husband Atty. Timothy Pressey of Haverhill, MA, grandson Benjamin Pressey, wife Kim and great grandchildren Cameron and Paige of Easton, MA, granddaughter Laura Fehmel, husband Paul and great grandchildren Matthew, Ryan and Nikolas of Methuen, MA.
Born in Warren, Ohio on April 16, 1914, son of Ida (Smith) Uhlinger and Monroe John Uhlinger. Paul was predeceased by brothers James, Ralph and Donald Uhlinger.
Paul graduated from Missionary Training Institute, Nyack, NY in 1937. He earned a BA from Youngstown University in 1941, Graduate School of Theology, Bachelor and Masters of Divinity from Oberlin College 1949. Received his Doctorate of Philosophy from Boston University in 1953.
Paul entered the profession of Ministry as an ordained Methodist Minister in 1941 and served several churches in Ohio and Massachusetts. He is a member of the Southern New England Conference of the Methodist Church, retired. Paul became a lecturer, associate professor at various academic venues ending his academic career retiring as Professor and Head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Akron - Ohio 1979.
Paul and his wife, Martha enjoyed extensive world-wide travel and teaching. Residence in Beirut, Lebanon travel in Spain, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Israel, Egypt and India to name a few. Paul was happiest when entertaining his family and extended family under the pine trees in Maine. He built and lovingly called our Maine family haven, “You Linger Awhile.”
Much appreciation is given to his exemplary caretakers at RiverWoods. A memorial service will take place in the Great Bay Room at RiverWoods, Exeter, NH on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity or a charity of your choice.
